Theresa Schumacher was born in Naples, Italy and married and American soldier during World War II. She cannot remember her or her family members ever having any of the 'all American illnesses', but after only two years on the standard American Diet (SAD Diet) she began to suffer with constipation and hemorroids. After suffering for years herself, her husband contracted colon cancer and died in 1971. During this time she began to learn about nutrition and the diet and after his death studied to become a certified nutritionist.
